April 2013

\n

Dear Visitor,

We’ve been having a great summer at Palladia Farm! We’ve been busy, busy, busy, so I apologize for getting behind on the newsletters.

In this issue: we welcome several new horses, riders, and a new trainer, Stephanie Nixon, to the Palladia Farm team. Also horse show highlights, Jane Dickinson is our profiled rider this month, and there are some administrative updates regarding the dress code, locker storage, branded merchandise, and FALL SCHEDULING.

Profile of the Month
\n

Jane Dickinson

\n

\n

\n

\n

Above: Jane riding Maverick to fifth place in the Fields and Fences Hunter Derby in June 2013 and receiving her ninth place ribbon in that same class with Tuohy. Jane went on to get ribbons on both horses in an unbelievably competitive younger adult amateur division at the Horse Shows by the Bay in Traverse City, Michigan, this July.

\n

\n

Jane Dickinson is one of Palladia Farm’s amateur adult riders, but just barely–she turned 18 last November. So far, she’s been enjoying her first year of showing as an amateur adult. This year marks another important first for Jane: it’s her first year competing at the 3’0\” height. With the help of her two horses Maverick and Tuohy, Jane has brought home top ribbons, tricolors, and derby prizes this show season.

\n

\n

One thing that’s NOT new this year is having Jane at Palladia Farm; she’s spent almost her entire riding career at Palladia, having started with us back in 2005. Her goals for this show season include competing in hunter classics, derbies, and trying to win a year-end award.

\n

\n

Above: Jane riding Encore (\”Cooper\”) in 2010. Sadly, Cooper will be for sale this August when Jane goes to college. Talk to Margaret if you’re in the market for a lovely, reasonably priced equine companion.

\n

\n

\n

\n

Jane has some pretty wise words about horses. She says that the thing she likes most about riding is learning how to connect with different horses. They all have their own styles and quirks. Jane likes to talk to the horses, and is famous at Palladia for giving really effective pep talks to the horses before they go in the ring (and not just to her own horses!). Jane says that her favorite thing about riding at Palladia is that everyone gets along so well and there’s never any drama. One of our favorite things about Jane is that she’s an incredibly determined, hard-working young lady who is always a team player and a pleasure to have around.

\n

\n

When Jane isn’t riding, she likes to dance, shop and be goofy. She is an accomplished model who has worked in Chicago, Los Angeles and New York. This June, Jane graduated from The Cove School. She will be attending Lesley University in Boston this fall. We’ll miss her terribly, but we wish her the best and will look forward to seeing her around the barn again next summer!

Stephanie Nixon Re-Joins the Teaching Team at Palladia Farm

\n

\n

It took seven years, but we’ve finally got Stephanie Nixon back in the saddle again at Palladia Farm! For those of you who don’t know her, Stephanie is a very experienced trainer (10+ years teaching experience) and was also a co-founder of Palladia Farm 10 years ago! She’s been gone for several years, lured by the corporate world, but is now back teaching part-time and is already a huge hit with our customers.

\n

\n

Welcome Kayla Way and Playdate!

\n

\n

Our newest addition to the Palladia Farm Kid Crew is the lovely Kayla Way and her pony Playdate. Kayla took a hiatus from riding and grew to be 5’10\”, which is a bit too tall for a pony. As a result, Mr. Playdate is sadly for sale. Contact Margaret or Alex if you’d like to buy a pony! Our goal is to find him a new loving home and to get Kayla a larger model by the end of the summer! Kayla is a hard worker, a great student, and a ton of fun to be around. We’re so glad to have you here!

\n

\n

Welcome Touché (aka \”CG\”)!

\n

\n

We have a new lease horse in named Touché, but we just call him \”CG\” around the barn. (That’s short for \”Curious George,\” his previous name.) He’s currently being shared by two of our adults, Meg and Kristin. Welcome, Kristin, to Palladia Farm–we hope you enjoy the rest of your summer here. Cheers to a great future on a great horse!

\n

\n

Welcome Tuidam (aka \”Tuohy\”)!

\n

\n

We are very glad to welcome Jane Dickinson’s second horse, Tuohy, to the barn. You can read all about him above. One thing you might not guess is that Tuohy used to be a high level jumper! This winter, however, he started his hunter career and even brought home a tricolor from the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, FL.

\n

Photo Sessions with Aullmyn Photography were a Huge Hit!

\n

\n\n\n

\n

\n

\n

\n

\n

\n

\n\n

We had an amazing time during our photoshoot with Wendie Aull of Aullmyn Photography on June 8th. Our models (horses and humans) were amazing. Some of the best shots are available online at Aullmyn Photography’s Website

A Father’s Explanation of Why He Had Horses for His Children

\n

\n

\n

\n

Because my daughter grew up with horses she has compassion. She knows that we must take special care of the very young and the very old. We must make sure those without voices to speak of their pain are still cared for.

\n

\n

Because my daughter grew up with horses she learned responsibility for others than herself. She learned that regardless of the weather you must still care for those you have the stewardship of. There are no \”days off\” just because you don’t feel like being a horse owner that day. She learned that for every hour of fun you have, there are days of hard slogging work you must do first.

\n

\n

Because my daughter grew up with horses, she learned not to be afraid of getting dirty and that appearances don’t matter to most of the breathing things in the world we live in. Horses do not care about designer clothes, jewelry, pretty hairdos or anything else we put on our bodies to try to impress others. What a horse cares about are your abilities to work within his natural world. He doesn’t care if you’re wearing $80.00 jeans while you do it.

Locker Storage
\n

We’ve installed some lockers upstairs that you can use to store your things while you’re at the barn. The locker combinations are on mini-business cards which you can grab and take with you–those are being printed now and will be stored by the coffee maker once they arrive. Just grab a card, store your stuff, and come back for it when you’re finished riding!

\n

\n

Fall Scheduling
\n

We will switch to our fall lesson schedule on Tuesday, August 27th, 2013.  I hope to get the final lesson schedule to you by August 12th. That that end, I’m going to open lesson scheduling requests on August 1st. Please email all scheduling requests to scheduling@palladiafarm.com. Lesson slots will be assigned in the following order: boarders, share boarders, twice weekly lesson students, once weekly lesson students. Thank you!

Refreshments Available
\n

Did you know that we provide a chilled Ice Mountain water cooler and a fully stocked Keurig machine for our customers? Please enjoy a nice beverage on us!

\n

Palladia Wear
\n

Our official Palladia clothing is ready!  There is a complete catalog near the white board at the barn. We’re going to place our next order some time in May. Please sign up soon–and don’t forget to buy an official Palladia Farm jacket!

\n

\n

Dress Code

\n

\n

*Please tuck your shirt in when you ride so that we can see your torso clearly. Sometimes when shirts are untucked they billow in the breeze, and it’s hard to tell whether a rider’s back is arched, rounded, or flat and relaxed.

\n

\n

*Please do not ride in blue jeans. The blue dye from the denim discolors the leather of the saddles, and results in green saddles.

\n

\n

*No boobs, no butts, and no bellies! Please wear conservative clothing and keep these body parts covered at the barn.

\n

\n

For a full refresher, please see our \”What to Wear\” page on the Palladia Farm website.

\n

\n

\n
\n

I hope you’ve enjoyed the newsletter, and that you’ll be able to take advantage of some of the opportunities that we’re offering at Palladia Farm. Enjoy your summer!

Sincerely,

\nMargaret Clayton\n
